Lesson 2 - Application of Waving Method
In this chapter I will show an application technique of Waving Method.
AIKI Kata Otoshi
A stands behind B facing to the same direction.
A…Defender
B…Attacker
a) A stands behind B and put both hands to B’s shoulders.
b) A moves down both hands on B’s shoulders in a wave motion without putting force on his both hands.
c) B feels “gravity”on his body center and collapses to floor.
Now I explain how to create wave motion with hands and arms.
1 Reproduce waving motion alone
If you apply non wave motion force onto the opponent’s shoulders, he can bear it. So, you have to move your hands and arms in a wave motion.
Wave motion is the motion of the water surface repeatedly swaying up and down.
First, stand alone and stretch your arms out. Then repeat the exercise of slowly moving your hands up and down centering on your shoulders. Now you can reproduce the wave motion.
After repeating this several times and having both arms memorize the wave motion, put both hands on B’s shoulders and move them in exactly the same way.
2 Sink your body by bending knees slowly
If you can’t do well with point ①, just keep putting your hands on B’s shoulders, slowly bend both knees and sink your body without being conscious of the wave motion.
The action of this slowly bending the knees and sinking the body is exactly the ideal wave motion.
・The speed at which the body descends is zero at the beginning.
・By the half stroke, the speed gradually increases.
・After that, in order not to hit the knee on the floor,
・the speed gradually decreases to zero at the end.
If you do this motion without putting force on your hands and arms, your hands and arms will naturally move in a wave motion.
This is a quick and easiest way that anyone can do immediately.
Summary of Lesson 2
A person who is applied this technique will feel that he is in an elevator which suddenly accelerated upwards. At that time huge gravity will act on his body center. As a result, he will not be able to endure it and will collapse to the floor.
But for this technique itwasn’tgravity that acted on the person’s shoulder. Although not a few AIKI instructors explain in such way, it was nothing but just a small force that moved his hands and arms in wave motion.
Even with such a small force, if an unexpected force is applied, the brain’s ability to control the muscles is lost, and humans become fragile. This is one example of such phenomena.
