I hope as many people as possible will be interested in AIKI and become able to practice it by following this course.

From this chapter I will introduce AIKI techniques using combination of different methods.

Most frequently used combination could be Undetectable Force Transfer and Targeted Force Transfer.  Now I show one example.

Soto Maki Nage

A and B sit by face to face.

A…Defender
B…Attacker

a・B grasps A’s both wrists.
b・A releases grasped right wrist and make Soto Maki, outer wrapping the opponent’s left forearm with his released right forearm and wrist. Then A tries to throw B by Soto Maki Nage to right side.
c・B resists strongly not to be thrown.
d・Then A applies force directly to B’s left elbow using Targeted Force Transfer.
e・B can not resist anymore and collapses.

This is a situation that often occurs when trying to throw an opponent with strong physical strength by Soto Maki Nage.

In such situations, using a combination of different methods is a very effective countermeasure.

1 Raise your arm in the way the opponent cannot detect that movement.

First you have to master the movement of Soto Maki to the opponent’s left forearm with your right forearm and wrist.

The opponent should not hold your wrist tightly all the time. Only at the moment you put force on your wrist to release it, he squeezes it tightly and blocks the movement of your arm.

So you have to raise your arm so that your opponent can’t detect your movement. If you cannot do this, go back to Lesson 3 and practice again.

2 Apply force directly to the target by strong consciousness.

It is the most difficult point of this technique that you apply force directly to the opponent’s left elbow who resists strongly not to be thrown.

If the opponent has strong arms, even if you apply your full force to the opponent’s left wrist with your right wrist, you will not be able to move the opponent’s left arm downward.

So, you have to send force directly to his left elbow using Targeted Force Transfer. It is quite important in this method to arouse strong consciousness. So, for example, it might help if you try to move your right arm while pointing your left index finger to your opponent’s left elbow.

Summary of Lesson 23

It is quite practical approach to use combined methods or combine AIKI with Jujutsu techniques.

For example, if you can’t unbalance the opponent with Jujutsu techniques, you can use AIKI to unbalance him first then apply Jujutsu techniques such as throwing.

In fact, I think that such usage is one of the ways to make effective use of AIKI.
